Unemployment is an issue that is affecting a steadily growing number of people. The long period of relatively low unemployment enjoyed in this country was rudely interrupted by the recession, and redundancy is now on the minds of many. Very few sectors are immune from the effects of the downturn, and it is therefore important for everybody to understand the help and benefits available to them in the event that they become unemployed.
Jobseekers Allowance
The main unemployment benefit is New Style Jobseekers Allowance (JSA) - what most of us know as the dole. New Style JSA is not granted to everyone who is out of work. Rather, you must be under the state pension age and actively seeking work. The official signing off your JSA at the Jobcentre will try to ascertain whether or not you are actually looking. However, it is possible to claim JSA while still doing some work; it is available to all those doing less than 16 hours work per week.
New Style Jobseekers Allowance is a contribution-based benefit. Contribution-based JSA depends on the National Insurance payments that you have made over the course of the previous two years. If you have worked full-time and made your full NI contributions for the previous two years, you will receive New Style JSA for the full period - currently set at 182 days. New Style JSA is paid at a rate of £72.90 per week for those aged under 25, and £92.05 for those aged 25 and over.
Income-based JSA has been abolished as of 1 April 2026. New claimants who need means-tested support must apply for Universal Credit instead, which has different eligibility rules and payment amounts.
Income Support
If you are unemployed because you are unable to work (for example because you are sick or a carer), you cannot claim Income Support as it was abolished on 1 April 2026. You may need to apply for Universal Credit or other benefits depending on your circumstances. Income Support no longer exists for new claims as it was abolished on 1 April 2026. You must also be working less than 16 hours per week. You local Job Centre Plus will be able to advise you on how much you may be entitled to.
Your situation may be slightly different. ask a question below ↓ and our editorial team will reply with our advice.
Housing Benefit
Housing Benefit is no longer available to most working-age people who need help paying their rent. New working-age claimants must apply for the housing element of Universal Credit instead. Housing Benefit is still available for pensioners and some people in supported accommodation. Each area of the country has a fixed maximum level of Housing Benefit to which you might be entitled. This is reviewed monthly in line with rental price changes. Your circumstances will dictate what proportion of this figure you are entitled to. Again, you will not qualify if you have more than £16,000 in savings. There is a significant amount of help available to those who are unemployed; consecutive Budgets have seen increases in the rates of redundancy pay.
If you find yourself unemployed, you should remember that there is no shame in claiming that to which you are entitled. You have been, or will be, a taxpayer, and the state is there to support you. Read more in our redundancy category.
on giving in her notice on that job for another job found that because of downturn of work in new employer because of Corona,
the new employer will not take her on .
She has contributed nation insurance for at least16 years.
However she has savings in excess of £16,000.
She has a Motgage.
Is there any benefit she can claim?
Am I entitled to any help as I am living on my savings & have a mortgage in property I live in.
Will the ban be considered as "making myself unemployed" by our caring welfare system?
I was made redundant at the beginning of the year. Up to that date
I had been in full time employment.
I have not worked in this time though I have applied for various jobs unsuccessfully.
My partner pays the mortgage and the savings I had which were less than £2k I have survived on.
Can I claim JSA (backdated)??
I did not think I could claim because my partner is working in a full time job.
Any advice welcome.
Many thanks
Does any one know if I can claim any benefits at all even though I’m not able to look for employment
As I have been self-employed am I entitled to claim benefits?
Now, they saying I will only qualify for the mortgage help in next 31 weeks. My mortgage company will not wait that long. By the next 31 weeks most likely my mortgage company will repossess my house.
Is there any help I can get from DWP towards my mortgage.
Your advice would be much appreciated.
I am going to be out of work for 8 weeks due to no work available. I’m a free lance teacher and will be off for the whole of the summer and an extra 2 weeks (8 weeks).
Can I claim anything for these 8 weeks?
Thanks.
Dave.
He is now 58 and has used all his savings to live he now has no money left and has applied for housing benefits and job seekers allowance.the job seekers allowance has come through but not the housing benefit every time he is told that some thing is still outstanding then he gives them what they needed and when he goes back when it still has not come through he is told that they need something else.this has been going on for weeks in the meantime I am paying his rent and I'm a pensioner my self.how long does it take for housing benefits to come through in England .he did not know that he could claim benefits if he had under £16000 in the bank .he waited until he had no money before he claimed .is there a time limit to claiming these benefits.
Thank you
Can I apply for income based Jsa ?
Also I have a shared fixed rate saver account but in joint names with me and my
Mother. Would this affect my claim?
Thanks
ive been out of the country for the past 6 years studying medicine abroad. I recently found out I am pregnant and my mum wants nothing to do with me or the baby and shes told me to get out of the house.
I am now homeless and pregnant. Will I get assistance from the state?
She worked in the UK 4 hours for one day per week from September 2016 to June 2017.
Is that a problem in order to file for child benefits in the UK.
Partner only needs his details- yours are not relevant- he needs to make a telephone claim and make clear that (if not in a UC area) he is makng a single claim for contribution based JSA. If in a Universal Credit area he will claim New JSA.
I have a quick question about about unemployment benefits. My boyfriend and I are thinking about moving to Germany. It is not sure if he will instantly find a job there. Would he be eligible to receive benefits in the UK?

I've used benefit calculators but they say I'm entitled to nothing - is that right? I've paid NI since 1989.
Should I register as unemployed even if I'm not expecting benefits?
I'm 47 years old and I'm a child care provider. Currently my job as a private nanny came to and end . I live with my partner who works . What benefits am I able to claim .

unfortunatly the market cards are already played with the big boss making a huge fortune and companies and buzness only hiring non europeans ,,,
but unemployment money do help, is better then unemployent ... and no money..
but what we need is jobs and help getting to work, real help,, not pretending to help..
less burocracy and more progressive..
What if any benefits could I get? I would have savings of £5000. I would be living with my elderly mother in her council house.

i am 25 yrs old unemployed guy. monthly income is around 2500. kindly get me way how i can be benefited through unemployment agency. suugest me.
Thank you
I have deductions from UC leaving me with 470 per month. After rent, there is barely enough left to get through the four weeks. I get paid the 4th every month sometimes some months are 5 weeks. I do get extra support from a charity which helps a lot but I still find I am skint the last week before payday. I end up borrowing from my long suffering dad who is on a pension himself so doesn't like to keep doing this. I don't get any help from the Jobcentre, just attend appointments that last literally for 5 minutes to check my jobsearch. I am 35 and spent the last few years signing on. I have had stints of work in between but since 2012 nothing really has happened and I get upset that I am in such a horrible situation. I have come close to going to a food bank but find I cannot bring myself to it. I wish I didn't have so many worries and negative thoughts about myself as it isn't getting me no where. I wish I was back on JSA as being paid every two weeks was by far better, and you didn't have to pay your rent either. I envy those who are still able to claim JSA although being on Universal Credit does mean you can work 16 hours and be a bit better off.
Do I have to sign on and claim JSA for the two years before my retirement and suffer all their harrassment in a job market that is very difficult for me at my age? Or is there any special arrangements available to spare me this indignity?
Patrick

Sorry to lumber you with this but I have tried so many government sites and can't seem to get an answer.
My wife (aged 55 yrs) cannot work due to suffering from Anklosing Spondylitis and Chron's Disease which is getting progresively worse. She is currently receiving treatment from a Specialist.
She is in receipt of a private pension of around £10,000 per year but has no other income.
I am 58 years old and in receipt of a private pension of £18,880 per year and work on a seasonal basis bringing home around £970 per month. I have been classed as 22% disabled through an industrial injury and receive about £30 per month from this.
We both live in our own house which has an existing mortgage on which we owe £67,000.
It is now reaching a stage where I must consider finishing work to care for my wife.
The questions I am trying to find the answers to are, is my wife entitled to any benefits whatsoever and if I was to finish work what benefits, if any, would be available to me.
I would be grateful if you could point me in the right direction concerning this enquiry.
Regards
